Porcelain Onlays

What Are Porcelain Onlays?

A solid restoration used to fill a cavity, an onlay is a great alternative to fitting a standard filling when there has been significant decay or damage to the tooth. Onlays are also a more cost effective and less invasive alternative to a dental crown. There are mainly used on the chewing surface of back teeth to help restore function and strength.

The Benefits of Porcelain Onlays

Onlays can withstand larger forces than standard fillings and they fit the existing tooth perfectly, making them easier to clean – helping to protect the tooth and gums from decay. Onlays can also increase the strength of a tooth, making them a cost-effective and long-lasting solution. With adequate care, an onlay can last longer than 20 years!

Traditionally, gold onlays have been used due to their hard-wear. However, modern technologies have allowed us to develop onlays with a natural, indistinguishable finish, whilst maintaining the strength of traditional gold onlays.

What Does the Treatment Process Involve?

Initially, any old fillings or decay is removed from the tooth, which is then cleaned and prepared. Following this, impressions will be taken to produce the porcelain onlay – which is produced in our carefully selected dental laboratory. During the production process, a temporary restoration is placed to ‘fill the gap’. During the fitting process, our dentist willcheck the size, fit and functionality of the onlay, before bonding it to the tooth with dental adhesive.
